About Me

The soccer pitch dominated my first two decades of life. I signed a contract with Major League Soccer at the age of seventeen and subsequently played three years for the Dallas Burn (now FC Dallas) before retiring at the ripe old age of twenty. Five months later, I entered into vocational ministry. For the next twelve years, I served on staff at three different churches.

I’ve been the Senior Pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church since November of 2017.

I’m married to Emily, and we are the proud parents of six children: Hudson, Owen, Haddon, Knox, Sarah, and Boston. I completed my M.A.R. at Reformed Theological Seminary with a thesis entitled, This is Not the End: Puritans on the Glory of Heaven. I received my Th.M. and Ph.D. from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

I also enjoy writing as time allows. My recent work has focused on Robert Murray M’Cheyne. I’ve published A Communion of Love: The Christ-Centered Spirituality of Robert Murray M’Cheyne (Wipf & Stock, 2019), and Love to Christ: The Piety of Robert Murray M’Cheyne (Reformation Heritage, 2020). My next book, A Holy Minister (Christian Focus), arrives in 2021.

Aside from pastoral work, I spend most of my time with my family, reading books, watching soccer, and running on country roads in Anna, TX.

  1. Providence is an amazing thing! I found this website by googling “the gospel is not a footnote”! The articles I have read so far have been so hopeful already. Your theological point of view is very clear and you can sense your passion for Christ and his Church. Thank you for sharing your gift in this format.

  2. I appreciated reading “Overcoming the Eclipse of God”. What prompted that title? I also liked the names of your children. I am from Scotland and so I appreciate the name Knox maybe he is named for the Scottish Reformer John Knox. The other names oc your children are equally beautifyl!

I also appreciate that you are doing your PhD work on Robert Murray McCheyne.

Another Scot who is one of my go to theologians is Sinclair Ferguson.

    Flora M. Forbes

Born in Glasgow which the motto for Glasgow used to be:

“Let Glasgow flourish by the preaching of the Word”.

    • Flora, thanks for the comment. The title “Overcoming the Eclipse of God” is actually taken from Ligonier. I’m planning to visit Scotland next year to dive into the M’Cheyne archives in Edinburgh.

  3. I want to send the motto for Glasgow with the complete motto which I only now read:

“Let Glasgow flourish by the preaching of thy Word and by praising thee”.

Sadly the motto is shortened to:
    “Let Glasgow Flourish”.

  4. Hi Jordan,

My name is John Tucker. I pastor another Providence Church – Providence Baptist Church in Kelowna, B.C. Canada. I stumbled across your blog while doing research for my DMin in Expository Preaching at The Master’s Seminary. Recognizing the great need for more devotion to public and private prayer in the congregation and my own life I decided to do my preaching project on Matthew 6:5-15. I enjoyed your thoughts from M’Cheyne on prayer. A number of years ago I was greatly encouraged (and challenged, convicted, humbled…) by Andrew Bonar’s biography of M’Cheyne. I will be spending more time with him in my studies. Thank you for nudging me further in his direction.

I see you’re doing your PhD at Southern. I completed my Mdiv there in 2009.

By God’s grace and for His glory,
    John

    • Thanks, John. M’Cheyne has some excellent stuff on public and private prayer. If it’s useful to your project, I’d be happy to point you in a couple of different directions.

      • Thank you Jordan! I’d really appreciate that! I’ll take whatever recommendations you can send me. One thing specifically I’m looking for is the source for his quote “A man is what he is on his knees before God, and nothing more.”

  5. Hello, I’m a student at Boyce College. Started following you on Twitter a few months ago after Lig Duncan tweeted about your transfer to the PCA. I’m a senior here and going to attend RTS Charlotte in the Fall. I am myself transferring from an SBC background to the Reformed Tradition. Would love to have coffee if you are ever on campus here at Southern. Thanks!!

  6. Dr. Stone,
My name is Ross Earley. Little Ross to Big Ross Earley. Popop (as I call him) told me it would be okay if I reached out to you. Would you willing to arrange a meeting sometime this week to share God’s good work in our lives so that i can glean some wisdom in my own planning? A phone or face-to-face conversation would work for me anytime, anyplace. Thank you for reading and have a wonderful day!
    -Ross

  7. Brother Jordan — thank you for the immense work you put in with the M’Cheyne book”The communion of love.”How did you possibly search and do all those references?l love M’Cheyne– a young, godly man, seldom seen todayThe the Lord Jesus fill you with Himself that you “may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God”– Ps.37:31.🤗

    • Thank you, Michael. I put together a fairly extensive researching system that allowed me to examine M’Cheyne’s sermons with specific depth. A fair amount of “new” things I bring out in the book come from that method. God was kind!

  8. Robert Murray McCheyne – In 2017 I read Memoir and Remains. Hands down the best Christian book I have ever read! I saw you have a new book coming out on McCheyne. Will be interested when it is available. I will spend some time reading your block and look forward to the book coming out. Blessings in Christ brother!

  9. Dr. Stone,

I am a young man in seminary (Westminster Philly) who loves M’Cheyne. I would love to be able to talk to you about M’Cheyne. Andrew Bonar’s book on him means so much to me. Would you be interested in a call? God bless!

    Sincerely,
    William Alderman

  10. Hello Dr. Stone,

This is William Alderman; I am a current student at WTS Philly in my second year. Learning about M’Cheyne has been a blessing to me. I would love to talk to your more about him and some of his friends (Andrew Bonar, Alexander Somerville) and teachers (Dr. Chalmers).

Bonar’s biography has been really influential for me. Would you be able to talk more about M’Cheyne if you have time? Thank you for what you do! Any time is appreciated.

    Sincerely,
    William Alderman
